Mama's Comfort Chili
A warming, protein-packed chili loaded with five types of beans and a perfect blend of ground beef and turkey. This slow-cooker comfort food is ideal for chilly fall and winter days.
Instructions
- 1
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef and turkey together over medium-high heat. Add freshly chopped onion or dried onion to the meat while browning for enhanced flavor.
- 2
While meat is cooking, open all cans of beans and rinse them thoroughly in a colander to remove excess sodium.
- 3
Place the rinsed beans into your crockpot.
- 4
Add the browned meat mixture to the crockpot with the beans.
- 5
Sprinkle the chili seasoning mix over the meat and beans, then stir to distribute evenly.
- 6
Pour in the tomato sauce and stir everything together thoroughly.
- 7
For thicker chili: Skip the next step. For thinner chili: Fill one empty tomato sauce can with water and add to the crockpot, stirring to combine.
- 8
Cover with lid and cook on low heat for 4-6 hours, stirring occasionally.
- 9
Let rest for 20 minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld and chili to thicken slightly.
- 10
Serve hot with your favorite chili toppings like shredded cheese, sour cream, or cornbread.
